“Her designs are chic, but they seem effortless – and you can dress them up or down,” says Irene Hernandez-Feiks, owner of Wonderland SF Boutique/Gallery. “The quality is amazing. My customers like how they’re simple but have a little something that makes them special.”

Chances are good if you own a small business that you are mystified by the miracle and magic that is Facebook. My clients (and friends for that matter) ask me at least once a day how they can make Facebook work for their business.

The simple answer is, start getting engaged. Today I stumbled on an article by Darren Rowse, founding father of a magical site call ProBlogger.net. In it he discusses five ways to use Facebook to Drive Traffic, Build Brand awareness, and Increase Reader Engagement. Methods vary from the using custom landing pages to doing promotional give aways. At the end of the day you need to:

Identify your audience – Hard to target your writing if you don’t know who you’re writing to (but you remember that from your 9th grade English class right?)

Give them what they want – Once you’ve identified who your audience is, cut to the chase and give them what they want! We all spend too much time on the internet as it is, cut the fluff and get down to business.

Cast your net - Once you’ve delivered to your target audience, cast your net again. This time aim for your potential audience and figure out what the clients you want might need. This shouldn’t be an after thought, but it shouldn’t be the focus of your content. As my father used to tell me about flyfishing – Cast carefully and calculated.

Stay active – Like your New Year’s resolution to hit the gym more often (how’s that working out?) you have to be diligent and stay motivated. Take a break if you need one, but don’t forget that your clients aren’t waiting around (and neither are your competitors)

Hope for some luck – Like Arnold Palmer said, ”It’s a funny thing, the more I practice the luckier I get”. Keep trying, adapt, evolve – never give up and you’ll never fail.

For some follow up reading, I’m recommending Darren’s article (link below). Nobody said this social media game was going to be easy, but you can’t win if you don’t play and the sooner you get started the better you’ll be at playing the game and reaching your target audience.
